Monopoly Live’s Great Infrared Eye Is Ever Watchful

February 9th, 2011 1 comment

Monopoly Infrared Tower

As if society wasn’t lazy enough Hasbro has announced that they will be releasing new varieties of classic board games with an electronic tower that is going to run the game.

The tower will manage aspects of the game such as dice rolls, rent, cash flow, etc. The tower “bathes the board in infrared light, and a camera can see reflectors placed on each game piece.”  The days of dealing out paper money and a banker are gone apparently. Paper money is being replaced by a plastic money card that is automatically reloaded by the tower when you pass go, collect rent from another player, etc.

Monopoly Live will be available this fall for around $50. You can still pick up the classic for around $15 if you are terrified about Sauron’s tower being able to watch your every move don’t want to drop the cash for the electronic version. But just think of all you will be missing. As one of the games designers, Leif Askeland said “The tower never makes a mistake”.

Carbon-Fiber Cheetah Robot Will Run As Fast As The Real Thing

October 20th, 2009 No comments

cheetah robot

A cheetah can run faster than any other animal. A gecko’s feet can stick to almost any surface without using liquids or surface tension. And some roaches scurry at nearly 50 times their body length in one second, which, scaled up to human levels, can be around 200 miles per hour.

MIT professor and robotic designer Sangbae Kim has looked at members of the animal kingdom in the past and successfully replicated their impressive abilities–two of which being the Stickybot, which can climb walls similar to a gecko and the iSprawl, a robot which mimics a cockroaches movement.

Kim’s next animal that he and his students are going to attempt to imitate is the cheetah. Current robots can be very efficient on flat terrain but in rough areas speed and mobility is very limited. The PackBot, for instance, which is used by the U.S. Military is barely able to go 5MPH.

Kim hopes that over the next 18 months he and his students are able to create a prototype that will have enough power to reach 70 MPH quickly.

The first step will be to create a computer model to calculate the optimal limb length, weight, gait and torque of the hip and knee joints.

The biggest challenge in this project won’t be the structure, but getting enough power from a motor to get to the desired speed quickly, says Kim.

If successful this could be a huge break through in the fight to bring functional sci-fi-esque robots to the world we live in. We will still be leagues away from an I,Robot or Star Wars world but imagine the uses of a robot capable of covering terrain quickly and efficiently! As long as it can handle stairs better than the Honda Asimo and can take control of our hands forcing us to learn an instrument by endless repetition then we will be impressed.

Then again, this could also be a huge break through in a robot uprising leading to the eventual destruction of the human race. One way or another, this is cool. [wired]

Activelink’s Quest To Bring Iron Man To Fruition

October 2nd, 2009 No comments

Power_Loader

You thought I was kidding!? Well, I was–kinda. Activelink’s ‘Power Loader’ is constructed of 500lbs of aluminum alloy and 18 electromagnetic motors. The Power Loader also has force feedback so you can in a sense feel what the arms feel as far as if you have something in your hand or not.

The suit right now is limited to being able to pick up 220lbs but that is still pretty cool since it requires  literally no work on your side.

They hope to have a version that is more fluid and capable of lifting more commercially available by 2015–not official but we believe they will have jet packs as well.

Out Of Control UAV Gunned Down By Air Force

September 15th, 2009 No comments

Military Drone Failure

On Sunday a MQ-9 Reaper drone became self-aware and attempted to wipe out the human race suffered a system malfunction that ended in its swift demise. As the UAV sped towards Afganistan’s airspace the pilots of the heavily armed, un-maned vehicle lost  control.

Almost immediately there was a maned airplane on its six that successfully took out the UAV before it crossed over into Afganistan’s airspace.

These UAVs are programmed to–in the event that they lose contact with the pilots–return to their home base. This is usually what happens but apparently this isn’t the first time that robots have over-ruled their creators a UAV has been intentionally shot down by friendly-fire. How many times does it need to happen before there is cause for concern? [PopSci]

Windows 7 Training For Best Buy Leaked, Has Microsoft Ever Used Linux?

September 9th, 2009 No comments

Windows 7 vs Linux Quiz 1

These screenshots are a little more than terrifying. Thanks to a Best Buy employee we all get to see the propaganda being shoved down their throats by the technology giant.

The screenshot above lightly scratches the surface of the garbage. For anyone who has never used Linux before, you are being taught that: your Ipod ,MP3, or digital camera most likely will not work with Linux; printers, and scanners do not work, your software will not work either; IM, Email, and photo viewing are not supported, nor are video games, tech support, and video chat. It is blatantly false.

Windows 7 vs Linux Quiz 2

What I found funny about the above image was the “Free Downloads” section talking about how you can get free software with Windows… Hmm, is Windows free to download? No! Is Linux free to download? Yes, almost every distro! Is Microsoft Office free to download? Is OpenOffice free to download? I think you know the answer.

Windows 7 vs Linux Quiz 3

All of the previous screens have been quazi-understandable. Yes, most standard home users will have a harder time using cameras, iPods, MP3 players, printers, scanners, games, etc with some distributions of Linux(while many of these are changing rapidly). But this is the beginning of the ridiculous Fact/Myth trash that Microsoft is pulling. Linux updates and upgrades are easy? Myth? Absolutely not! Anyone who has ever used a distro of Linux that is aimed at the home user–such as any of the Ubuntu flavors–knows just how easy updates are. It is virtually the exact same process as updating Windows. You receive a notification that updates are ready and then just click that you want to download/install them. Piece of cake.

Windows 7 vs Linux Quiz 4

While it is true that you are not completely safe with Linux I can honestly say that of all of the virus issues I have had, 100% of them have been while using Windows, with and without virus protection.

Windows 7 vs Linux Quiz 5While we are writing propaganda to push our new product lets put together another fact/myth scenario:

Is Windows is the most cost effective solution when you need to set up 300 workstations that only need access to a web browser?

Fact or myth? I’m not even going to help you out on this one. If you are stuck, leave now. Don’t come back.

On the bright side, anyone who is familiar with Linux probably hopefully won’t be turned astray. On the downside, just because you work at Best Buy does not mean you are tech savvy, these are the people who help those who walk in and are still debating if they really need to upgrade their old Windows 98 machine.

Enslaved Mindless Robot Children – The Perfect Mall Ride For Your Kids

September 1st, 2009 3 comments

It had to happen eventually, someone has managed to create the only thing that could possibly be creepier than a robot that latches onto your hands and forces you to play the piano. This children’s ride in a mall in the Philippines lets your kids sit in a carriage and ride other kids.

The kids sit in the seat and have reins to control the mindless robot child around the pen–which seems to be a little too confusing for the boy in the video.

I am skeptical, but this may be the future of transportation. One thing I do know, when the day comes that robots begin to think for themselves and attempt to peacefully coexist with humans, one of their friends will show them this video on youtube, which will eventually lead to the destruction of the human race.

Rubber Band Gun Rapidly Fires 200 Rubber Bands, Is It Enough

August 11th, 2009 No comments

Japan Rubber Band Gun Shooting Association

Mr. Nakamura Akira is a member of the Japan Rubber Band Gun Shooting Association–I wish I was kidding–and creator of the rubber band machine gun. The gun is capable of firing off 200 rounds rubber bands without a reload–which is good since loading the 200 rubber bands is very time consuming.

Now that you have seen what the gun can do take a look at what Nakamura can do:

And yes–unfortunately–I believe that is a holster he has under his left arm.

Interested in making one yourself? Nakamura has the book for sell on amazon for a little over $16 USD–that is if you can read Japanese.

Hadron Collider Suffers Potentially World-Ending Mishaps–Again

August 7th, 2009 No comments

Hadron Collider

You remember the doomsday device giant laser machine we posted about last month. Well, after a series of unfortunate events the guys at CERN have decided that it would be best to run it at half power–only 3.5 trillion electron volts–per beam when they start it up again late this fall. If things go well and we are all still here then they are going to step it up to 5 TeV per beam and then by the end of 2010 hope to be back at full power–7 TeV per beam. So, keep an eye on the news… while you still can.

Spend $3k On Your Under Bed Gun Safe, Be As Excited As The Salesman

August 5th, 2009 No comments

The BedBunker Gun Safe is now available. If the name alone didn’t sell you then let their Billy Mays impersonator moderately enthused spokesman in the video above do the job.

With a BedBunker you can keep your money, guns and other important items right under the bed in a secure and incredibly convenient hidden location. The safe is rated to be able to withstand 2 hours of fire and can hold 30 rifles and 70 handguns but will that be enough?

You can pick one of these puppies up from BedBunker for $2k to $4k depending on the size of your bed.

The Majority Of US Citizens Are Very Susceptible To Jedi Mind Tricks

I am trying to keep this blog strictly tech related but we here at Forca may have enjoyed this video a little too much not to share.

Coca Cola Freestyle Dispenser–Sure To Increase Fountain Drink Wait Times

July 23rd, 2009 3 comments

Watch the video. While awesome I see this potentially causing head aches at our favorite–greasy–fast food joint. Coca-Colas idea is awesome: one dispenser that is easy to refill, easy to monitor and remotely manage. The machine will send info to let Coca-Cola monitor different trends, see when a certain drink is selling well, see if they need to recall another or see if something needs to be repaired. This will also make it easier for the owner of the machine to see when something is about to run out, etc.

The bad? Two things. The first–most concerning–problem from this is Coca-Cola’s ability to remotely manage the machine and release some kind of widespread liquid based epidemic. Lets face it this is bound to happen sooner or later will probably never happen but still–scary.

Seriously though. Here is the real issue.

Confusing TechnologyMaking something more complex than it needs to be.

Renting a movie at RedBox could not be simpler–easier than going to another store, walking through to find the movie you want then standing in line to pay for it–however those who are technologically challenged still take 10 times longer than it should to rent a movie. During my time in retail I saw that the majority of people would rather stand in a line of 5 to 10 people than use self checkout.

Now Coca-Cola is hoping to have standard fountain machines in restaurants replaced with these “Freestyle” drink machines. What do most of us think? Awesome! With the ability to choose from over 100 drinks on a touch screen that all come out of the same place we all feel a little bit closer to the Jetsons. But techy people aren’t the only only people who go to Mcdonalds. So, when we begin to see the “Freestyle” in our fast food restaurants expect to stand in line behind a few tech illiterate people who are starring at the screen confused and slightly scared.

Help them figure it out. You may be their only hope.

Mars Lifeform Experiments Underway, Could Go Terribly Wrong

July 22nd, 2009 No comments

Experiement Gone WrongLife being on Mars now or at some time in the future has become a definite possibility with he discovery of water–and evidence of water–as well as methane on Mars. Now biologists have discovered microbes that can withstand extreme heat, cold and other harsh environments with little to no moisture–conditions much like Mars.

Methanosarcina barkeri is the most versatile survivor. It isn’t picky about where it lives and can even create its own organic molecules from scratch using phosphate, sulfur and some other minerals found in soil and nitrogen from the atmosphere. M. barkeri can even create its own energy solely from hydrogen and carbon dioxide–both of which are believed to be on Mars.

Biologists are to begin rigorous testing on the microbe to see just how much it could handle and see if it could truly survive on the red planent. I for one can see this going horribly wrong if the microbe is modified by a shaky hand or too close to a giant laser.

One day biologist hope to do a real world test with the microbe on Mars.

Robots Swiftly Approaching World Domination, Will Soon Do Away With Need For Online Dating

July 10th, 2009 No comments

RobotsIn 1961 GM invented the first robot. Their robot wasn’t what we picture now when we hear the word. It was designed to take hot, forged metal parts for vehicles and dip them in water to cool.

Einstein Robot

Our view of robots has changed considerably since then. Now robotics are a crucial part of manufacturing and our daily lives. We go to the grocery store and while putting our keys away and pulling out our grocery list the doors are opened automatically for us. We go to the bank and in stead of standing in line can put our magical piece of plastic into the machine and it will dispense the money we ask it to–hopefully. Our trash cans get rolled out to the corner so in the morning the robotic arms of the garbage truck will dump our trash out and put our can back.

Now–using machine learning–robots can change and ‘grow’ almost as a human would. In the past in order to get the unbelievably realistic Einstein to make facial expressions programmers would have to program each of Einstein’s 31 individual facial muscles. Computer scientists from the Machine Perception Laboratory at the University of California have now–using machine learning–made it possible for the robot to learn facial expressions on its own.

As the robot began to learn new facial expressions and what the different muscles did it began fine tuning facial expressions to create new ones. Researchers explain that it is a slow process for the robot to learn new expressions much like a human does–scary.

One day I am sure, they will become completely self aware and we will all be doomed. Until then enjoy these robot videos!

Fire Laser Guided Missiles From Your PC

June 25th, 2009 No comments

Laser Guided Missile Turret

Its true. Using your PC and some special hardware–along with included software that looks like something from a video game made in the 90s–you can aim and fire USB powered missiles–ok foam darts–from your PC.

Need to be able to perform a remote attack? Get a rocket launcher with mounted web cam to take a shot beyond view. Not good with a crosshair? Get your laser guided missile system–seen in the picture above.

Choose from 3 different version available at ThinkGeek.
